Questions people ask before the first visit
If yours isn't here, we're glad to answer it directly — no pressure and no obligation either way.
Your first visit
Your first visit is a long conversation, not a checklist. We go through what's been happening, how long it's been going on, your sleep, health history, family history, and what you've already tried. We talk about what you'd like to be different. By the end, you'll have a diagnosis explained in plain language and a plan you've had a real say in.
Yes, when it's appropriate. Medication is one option rather than the only one, and it's never started without a full discussion of benefits, side effects, alternatives, and what you're comfortable with. If medication isn't the right answer for you, we'll say so and talk through what else might help.
About 60 minutes. Follow-up visits are typically 25 to 30 minutes. The first appointment is deliberately longer because an accurate diagnosis needs room for your story — not a rushed fifteen minutes.
Telehealth and privacy
You meet by secure, encrypted video — no app to install and no waiting room. You'll receive a private link before your appointment and join from a quiet, private place with reliable internet. For most psychiatric concerns, virtual care is equivalent to being in the office, and many people find it easier to speak honestly from their own home.
Everything you share is confidential and protected by the same laws that cover an in-person office. Records are stored securely and never shared without your written permission, except in the specific safety situations the law requires.
For most conditions — including anxiety, depression and ADHD — research finds video-based psychiatric care produces comparable diagnosis, treatment and outcomes. If in-person care is ever the better choice for you, we'll say so and help you find it.
Insurance and billing
Kaur Psychiatry is in network with Aetna, Cigna, Curative, Highmark Blue Shield of New York, Carelon, Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield (formerly Empire), and UnitedHealthcare (UHC). Coverage varies by plan, so if you're not sure, call 516-915-6826 and we will help you verify your benefits before your first visit.
